Chocolate and Mental Clarity

March 24th, 2009
by drselzer

We’ve known now for a few years that polyphenolic flavonoids help reduce symptoms of dementia. These can be from green tea, red wine or any plant that is rich in polyphenols. One of the most intriguing sources of flavonoids is chocolate from cocoa powder. In fact, cocoa is one of the most importance sources of flavonoids in food.

Studies have shown that regular consumption of dark chocolate, which has a high flavonoid content, increases the blood flow to the brain. We discussed this in a previous blog. Researchers from Norway have recently studied the benefits of dark chocolate flavonoids on the ability of elderly people to think clearly. Their results were striking:

In our study, we found that habitual chocolate users performed better in all cognitive tests and had significantly reduced risk for poor test performance in most tests

The authors conclude that the “real” effect of chocolate would be much greater because much of the chocolate consumed in the US and Europe is milk chocolate, which has a significantly lower flavonoid content than dark chocolate.

To avoid this problem, products made with cocoa extracts, standardized to a high flavonoid content, provide the best source of cocoa health benefits, without any of the fats, sugars and other unwanted guests that normally accompany chocolate products.

Green Tea and Leukemia

The evidence keeps pouring in. First came test tube studies. Then came animal studies. Now the clinical and epidemiological studies are beginning to take hold. Green tea does not stop amazing us with its ability to promote good health.

Today’s blog entry is about a study based in Taiwan, but performed by scientists from Harvard University, a large school in Massachusetts.

The researchers studied segments of a population in southwestern Taiwan. They compared the habitual green tea consumption of people at different age groups and their rates of leukemia.

Significant inverse relationships between green tea consumption and leukemia were found in people over 16 years old. This means that the more green tea they drank, the lower their risk of contracting leukemia. The relationship was strongest in people 16 – 29 years old. They did not find any such connection in people younger than 16.

This study supports an earlier investigation in China that also studied green tea consumption and leukemia patients.

Green Tea and Heart Health

Green Tea and Heart Health

There are many ways to skin a rat, especially if the rat is heart disease. Some of the most notorious players in heart disease are well known indeed: high blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, oxidative stress and the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Of course, there are many more.

Scientists have been claiming for years that green tea helps protect the cardiovascular system from some of these ills. In fact, a new study from February 2009 showed that green tea polyphenols:

lowered blood pressure,
lowered LDL cholesterol,
lowered oxidative stress and
lowered a marker for chronic inflammation

in healthy volunteers within 3 weeks of taking a standardized, caffeine-free green tea supplement. This is particularly remarkable because it confirms the results from countless laboratory-rat studies and shows that green tea really does work in humans.

Chocolate and Heart Health

The ancient Aztecs and Olmecs understood the health benefits of chocolate. They used the beans to treat pain and inflammation. Now we know that chocolate is rich in polyphenol antioxidants called flavonoids. Not only powerful antioxidants, these flavonoids have been shown to support healthy cardiovascular health and in particularly a healthy blood pressure.

Dutch scientists, for example, found that men, who eat large amounts of chocolate, had lower blood pressures than those who did not.

One major factor in blood pressure regulation is the elasticity of the blood vessels. Rigid veins and arteries cause an increase in blood pressure. Flexible vessels allow for a decrease in blood pressure and an increased overall health.

The flavonoids in chocolate have been shown to increase the production of nitric oxide (NO) in the cells of the blood vessels. This makes them smoother and more elastic, which is one mechanism with which chocolate supports your blood pressure health.

Most chocolate available on the market today has been processed in ways that destroy the flavonoids. There are, however, products that are specifically designed to provide the chocolate flavonoids. These are primarily cocoa extracts, where the healthy polyphenolic flavonoids are concentrated from the rest of the beans before the destructive processing occurs. The result is a powerful polyphenol extract that can be used to make great tasting dietary supplements. Once such supplement can be found at HerbaSway.com.

Statin Drugs and Coenzyme Q10

March 5th, 2009
by drselzer

Today I would like to discuss the very important research about statin drugs and their effect on coenzyme Q10 in your body. First, a few words about Q10. Your body produces its own coenzyme Q10, where it accumulates in the mitochondria of your cells. There, it participates in the process that produces the energy molecule ATP. In fact, about 95% of your body’s energy is procured with this process.

As you age, your body’s ability to produce Q10 wanes and your energy levels fall. For many people, this is accompanied with a rise in their blood cholesterol levels. Their doctors then prescribe a statin drug to reduce the cholesterol.

New information is showing a negative effect of statin drugs on levels of coenzyme Q10 in the blood. In other words, statin drug use results in lower Q10 levels. It would therefore be of interest for people on statins to supplement their diet with a source of Q10.

In fact, this one study showed a decrease of Q10 by over 40% in patients taking atorvastatin for only 16 weeks. Supplementation of Q10 increased the Q10 levels by 127%.

Another side effect of statin drug use is myopathy, or muscle degeneration. This might also be a result of Q10 loss in muscle cells.

Many researchers now recommend that people taking statin drugs supplement their Q10 levels. This is best done with a product, such as HerbaSway’s Liquid CoQ10, which is easy to take and easy to absorb. Best results are achieved if the product is taken in small doses (one dropper) three times daily.
